Delhi residents continue to gasp for
breath, due to the high levels of white smog that have spread in our
environment. Citizens in small groups have decided to leave the city until the
air becomes breathable again. Since the celebration of the Diwali, the most
vibrant festival in India...this sort of smog has enveloped the city of New
Delhi.
The sudden increase in pollution was
recognized as a consequence of vehicular traffic, smoke from firecrackers,
and the burning of post-harvest paddy stalks in Delhi NCR and nearby states.
Environmentalists say that the air quality
has been severe as pollution levels touch a new height. Particulate matter
levels have crossed the 900 mark in numerous areas, almost 15 times more than
the safety limit. The city has been under the cover of oxygen purifying
masks, and the Government has introduced a set of safety measures. Schools were
shut down for days in the month of November. Although Delhi Pollution levels
have decreased from what they were, this is an alarming situation. It is
high time that our country takes required actions for our city. Companies and
corporates should start making use of renewable energy sources and people
should travel more by public transportation.
